Nags Head is home to the tallest natural sand dunes in the eastern United States, and is also the most visited state park in North Carolina. These dunes consist of 3 major peaks of shifting sand that offer some pretty amazing views. Located at the base of Jockey’s Ridge is a museum where you can learn Outer Banks history and research the wildlife that makes this state park their home. From hang-gliding, to kite flying, to sunset watching, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Jockey’s Ridge!

Nags Head Woods

Interested in experiencing the nature and wildlife of the Outer Banks? Or just need a break from your beach chair? Nags Head Woods is a great location to experience the Outer Banks in its most unaltered state.  As you trek through the various trails, you’ll be able to identify diverse ecosystems that make up the preserve. You may be able to sight a few of the thousands of native species that call these woods their home. Between wetlands, woods, and sand dunes, you won’t ever become bored with the views. There is lots to explore and discover on the Nags Head Woods Preserve.

Bodie Island Lighthouse

Lighthouses are a major component of Outer Banks landmarks, and you can visit one right here in Nags Head! Body Island Lighthouse was built in 1872 and stands at 156 feet tall. This lighthouse is located in Nags Head, but is found at the beginning of what is known as the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Bodie Island Lighthouse’s unique horizontal stripes set it apart from other lighthouses around the Outer Banks. Since the completion of years of renovations, visitors are now able to climb the lighthouse. 214 steps lead you to the top of Bodie Island Lighthouse, where you can have amazing views and photo opportunities.

Jennette’s Pier

Get up close and personal with the Atlantic Ocean!  Jennette’s Pier is the most recently constructed pier on the Outer Banks, but it has been a local and tourist hot-spot since 1939.  The original pier structure collapsed after Hurricane Isabel in 2003, and work on rebuilding the pier began in 2009.  In May of 2011, Jennette’s Pier was reopened to sightseers, fisherman, and curious visitors and locals.  The pier is owned by the Outer Banks Aquarium, and schedules a variety of summertime aquatic educational programs.  Jennette’s Pier offers some of the best fishing on the Outer Banks, a gift shop, an educational center, and a large public beach access; there is something for everyone!
